Фотографии, естественно, не мои (не пускают ведь), так что выражаю благодарность многочисленным авторам Athos, the Holy Mountain (called Agion Oros in Greek) is situated on the peninsula in northern Greece. The peninsula protrudes into the Aegean Sea for 80 kilometres at a width of 12 kilometres. The Holy Mountain is located on the southwestern side of the peninsula and rises to a height of 2033 metres. Mount Athos comes under the direct jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and forms a self-governed part of the Greek state. In the 9th – 10th centuries almost all Orthodox nationalities established their own monasteries here. Nowadays it is home to 20 monasteries. |
